PYP vs MYP: How the IB Continuum Actually Works, Explained Simply

It's one continuous educational philosophy delivered in stages, with each stage building directly on the one before it.

Every IB stage—whether a student is 3 or 16—is built around the same two threads:
The IB Learner Profile: Ten core characteristics the IB develops in every student—Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective. This is why an IB education produces global citizens, not just strong test-takers.
Approaches to Learning (ATL): Core skills—thinking, research, communication, social, and self-management—taught at every stage with increasing complexity. A 6-year-old learning to ask a good question is training the exact same muscle an 11-year-old uses to conduct research.

PYP (Ages 3–11): Where Inquiry Begins
Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, the Primary Years Programme organizes learning around big, cross-disciplinary questions that blend math, language, science, and social studies. The goal isn't memorizing facts—it's building the instinct to question, investigate, and connect ideas from an early age.
MYP (Ages 11–16): Depth Meets Inquiry
The Middle Years Programme keeps that inquiry-driven spirit but adds structure through distinct subjects taught in real-world contexts rather than through rote learning. Independence shows up concretely through the Personal Project—a self-directed piece of work students plan and complete largely on their own in 10th grade.
